"The Year 1000: What Life was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium, An Englishman's World" is a lovely little read. Chapters are designed around the Julian Work Calendar and it begins with a description of the calendar itself.
It was an oak tree that provided the ink, from a boil-like pimple growing out of its bark. How can you resist a book that starts with that sentence? It was a fun read and I definitely recommend it.
