Tonight I made Steak and Cauliflower from Mum's recipe. It's really good, really easy and really fast. What could be better?
1 1/2 lbs lean round steak
1 head cauliflower, chopped to suit
8 oz. fresh mushrooms, sliced
2 cans diced tomatoes (I use the ones with peppers)
2 tbsp fresh grated ginger root
2 cloves garlic
2 tbsp Hoisin sauce or Oyster sauce
1/4 tsp coriander
Soy sauce, salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp whatever oil
Cut steak into bite size pieces and brown in oil. Dump in the rest of the ingredients, except mushrooms, and cook until done, about half hour. Add mushrooms for last ten minutes. Serve over rice.
Peter's Dad is Chinese and his Mum learned to cook from Dad's grandfather after moving in with his family at 16. One of her favorite tales is of Peter in elementary school popping up to answer the teacher's question, "Has anyone in class ever eaten any foreign food?"
Peter's answer was, " Oh, yes, we had roast beef and potatoes just last weekend."
